'A'ahoaka no Maunakapu Huli pau ka hele a ke one o 'Aliomanu
The 'A'ahoaka which belongs to Maunakapu All proceed on to the sands of 'Aliomanu
Maunakapu (Taboo Mountain) is the ancient name of the mountain range above Aliomanu (place name of the area in northeast Kaua'i beneath Kalalea Peak). The two lines above are from a very old Hawaiian chant. The name of the peak is Kalalea and is home to the famous hole-in-the-mountain, Kapukalani, sacred hole, spiritually taboo. In ancient times, a huge fire was lit in the hole to warn fisherman out at sea that the cursed Amu wind was blowing. The fisherman would rush back to safety upon the shores. The mountain range Maunakapu and Kapukalani are taboo and sacred places. The light emanating from the fire in the hole was a warning then to fishermen to return immediately. The warning now is spiritual for "all who see that they must return to KE AKUA." Many come here to Anahola to experience Kapukalani!
